Over the years I have spoken to many, many people, all of whom have their own definition of the word ‘spiritual’. Some despise the word, suggesting that it is meaningless, while others even fear it. I have always wondered why the word ‘spirit’ or ‘spiritual’ provokes such reaction.
Spiritual can be defined as an activity that feeds the greater part of ourselves – the soul, or higher self. Having recently visited Bali, a mecca for all sorts of spiritual activities, I witnessed many spiritual gatherings and found myself questioning if Bali was more spiritual than other place, say perhaps a supermarket on a Saturday morning, or is it just a place where people can play at being spiritual and then take their coat off and return to their non-spiritual lives?
At this point I’d like to propose the idea that the morning shop at the supermarket can be an equally spiritual experience.
Exploring the meaning of the word ‘spiritual’, I have concluded it means ‘to live by one’s truth’. Where this truth comes from is still a source of speculation and how one gets/hears/sees truth is also a non-fixed vehicle.
Some people just speak their truth as and when it turns up. Others ‘channel’ it by tapping into the consciousness of another spirit. Some receive it in messages or in the form of a direction. Others look for ‘signs’ – coincidences or repeated patterns. What they all have in common, is that their ‘intuition’ seems to hold answers that our ‘Earth brain’ doesn’t understand.
Imagine for a moment that there are two worlds. One is the human world, a physical place that requires us to work to feed ourselves, find love in social interaction and love. The other world is not physical, it contains a different form of consciousness. Here, one’s ‘truth’ can be found and once recognised, needs to blend with the physical world.
We must adjust to this new information; we must live by our truth. What we do here on Earth should align with this truth. It can be one of the greatest challenges in life.
That said, trying to live from someone else’s truth, totally submissive to another’s truth can be one of the most destructive things you can do. One’s truth is exactly that and everybody has the right to search for it and live by it rather than follow the pack. However, there are very gifted people who can help you in this matter.
Start listening to your truth
During my life, I had made decisions, in good faith, that were not based around my truth. Then, I was involved in an official process which involved a lot of paperwork. It became so convoluted because of those decisions. What could have been a simple process became very convoluted. It was perpetually draining and a voice in my head told me ‘You created this!’ I know from this experience the importance of ‘living my truth.’
Tap into your truth
Imagine being able to tap into this truth at all times: every decision, personal or business transaction be it with body work, meditation or activity programs. All it requires is for the mind to assist us, to assess where this ‘truth’ is taking us.
The secret is to not question it. To hear the truth, trust it and act on it. Of course, we are all born with free will so we have the right to ignore or doubt our ‘truth.’ This is what makes spiritual pursuit so challenging.
Living in time and space means we can plot movement, most of which comes from habit or conditioning. We repeat what we believe is reliable. Living by one’s truth throws a curve ball at our exisiting behaviours – it can be extremely powerful and bring about remarkable changes and improvements.
So, why do I think the visit to the supermarket can be as spiritual an event as visiting Bali?
You may say the food is all processed or the place is so soulless. However, if you are living your truth the reason you are there, or anywhere for that matter at any given moment, is that your truth has led you there. What is it you are in? What is it you want to be in? What will or won’t you accept? What needs to change? This is what living by your truth demands and it is happening at every moment. I believe the art of living by one’s truth is to not get in the way.
