The Red Magus – the Apport – an excerpt

‘Oh, my goodness. How exciting. It’s an apport! I’ve heard about them but never experienced it.  Tell me exactly what happened.’

Cassie laughed at her friend’s excitement and explained again the events of the night before, and how the little package that now sat in front of them on the coffee table had appeared out of nowhere.  She explained how the woman had handed it to her in her mind’s eye, and suddenly it had just appeared in her physical hand.

Cassie still couldn’t believe that it had happened and kept running the events through her mind as if she had missed something and was fooling herself in some way.  But the little package had just appeared, seemingly out of thin air.  The two friends sat in silence for a while just staring at the package, as if something else was going to happen.

‘Have you opened it?’ Sara asked.

‘Not yet.  I thought I’d wait to open it with you.’

‘Thank you,’ Sara said with genuine gratitude. ‘This is so exciting!

Cassie smiled at her friend.  ‘Do you want to open it?’

Sara looked a little startled.  Cassie could almost see her thinking through the options, as to whether she should or shouldn’t open the package.

‘I’m not sure if that would be a good idea.  The woman wanted you to have it, didn’t she.’

‘The Magus!’ Cassie suddenly said.

‘What?’ asked Sara. ‘The What?’

‘The Magus.  That’s what we need to call her.  Not the woman or a witch.  She’s a Magus,’ Cassie concluded.

‘Okay, the Magus.  I like that. Let’s open it.’ Sara paused a moment. ‘Shouldn’t we document it?  Maybe I should video you opening it, so we have some evidence. Alice would kill us if we didn’t,’ she added.

‘Why will we need evidence?  We can’t show anyone this, can we?  They won’t believe me, and they will think I’ve gone completed mad.’ Cassie looked slightly alarmed.  ‘This is just between you and me, Sara.  For now, at least.  I might tell Sophia and Martha but other than that let’s keep it to ourselves.’ Cassie looked intently at her friend willing her to agree.

‘Well, I do think you should tell Alice.  She would be fascinated.  After all, if this is a genuine apport, and I’m sure it is, then it will date from another time and Alice could get all sorts of information from the cloth and the twine.’ Sara looked at Cassie with a concerned look on her face. ‘I do think you should tell Alice’, she concluded, turning back to study the package again.

‘Okay, fair enough. We’ll video it for Alice and then let her have the different parts to research.  You’re right, she will be fascinated.’

‘Great!’ exclaimed Sara.  ‘Okay, I’m ready,’ and she held her mobile phone up to record the grand opening.

Cassie nodded at her friend as she slowly leant forward so that she could open the package while Sara continued filming.  For some reason, she suddenly seemed nervous to touch it more than she had to.  Cassie gently pulled the string knot undone and allowed the rough square of hessian to gently unfold by itself.  Inside were a few sprigs of herbs and the strange little wax figure of a woman, kneeling and with her wrists and ankles tied, which Cassie had seen before.

‘I don’t know why I’m nervous,’ Cassie said.  ‘I saw her make up the package, so I know exactly what’s in it.’

Sara was now kneeling on the floor in front of the coffee table, her nose a few inches from the wax effigy sitting on its square mat of material. ‘Wow! I can’t believe it. It’s amazing and a bit creepy all at the same time.’ She moved her head away from the figure, ‘And it’s a bit mind-blowing, to be honest,’ she added.  ‘She’s given you a binding spell to make that woman lose interest in Joel.  I never thought I’d see an apport so close.  A gift from Spirit, and in this case from the Magus. Physical matter just appearing out of nowhere.’

Sara carefully viewed the little figure from all sides as she continued to film, moving it around with a pencil so as not to touch it and change any of its energy and properties.  Eventually, she said, ‘So are you going to burn it?’

‘Yes, I suppose so,’ said Cassie. ‘We’ll have to find the right time and place.’

The two looked at each other and nodded, and then both started back at the effigy in silence.

A couple of days later they found themselves tucked into a small booth at the back of their favourite wine bar with Alice.  They had finally found a convenient time for them all to catch up, and they were determined to use the time to pick Alice’s brains.

‘Magus,’ Alice said. ‘Yes, I’ve heard that term but it’s masculine.  I think the feminine should be Maga.  It means a witch, a magician, a priestess.’

Cassie smiled, ‘That sounds about right.  It was the masculine term I was given though.’

‘That’s interesting.  Maybe she was viewed as an equal to men.  A Magus would officiate over life ceremonies, like birth, marriage and death, as well as helping people with their problems,’ Alice explained. ‘It all sounds interesting. And you see the Magus, do you?’ Alice asked, raising her right eyebrow slightly.
