Energy Healing in the NHS

NHS

My experience as a Registered Nurse in many Accident and Emergency departments within NHS hospitals has shown a huge increase in the number of people suffering with mental health issues. Approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK experience a mental health problem each year and 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem (such as anxiety and depression) in any given week.

People with mental health issues quite often feel scared, vulnerable, alone, lost and disillusioned; they don’t know where to turn to and quite often end up presenting in A&E.

Assessment usually takes place in A&E to firstly rule out any medical issues before any member of the Psychiatric Liaison Team (PLT) will even consider seeing the patient. During this time the patient will have to sit in a cubicle on their own, quite often crying, shaking, dissociated, confused, uncomfortable, lonely, scared and having little understanding of what the process will involve in the department, even though the staff have tried their best to liaise with the patient and multi-disciplinary team.

When the PLT team does eventually arrive and assess the patient, which can be known to take a long time due to the high level of demands on the PLT team; it can be very likely that the patient will be either discharged home, prescribed medication or some cases sectioned.

In many instances, many of the patients return to A&E, whether this be hours, days, weeks or even months later, the whole cycle starts again. This is detrimental to the patient and time consuming and stressful for the staff not to mention the expense for the NHS.

Staff are unable to provide the time needed to simply ‘be’ with these patients due to high work pressures. Through no fault of the staff, there is sadly, little time for empathy or compassion.

Time for a new perspective, how about trying other alternatives?

Rather than numbing and suppressing the symptoms of mental health with medication, why not use Energy Healing? It is a natural, holistic way of working WITH the SYMPTOMS and can reach the ‘route cause’ of the issue (dis-ease of both mind & body). It provides the opportunity and ability to ‘let go’ of the symptoms in a comfortable way rather than suppressing them and can also release the patient from a dependency on medication.

Keep it Simple

Simple techniques can be the most effective;

  • How to use diaphragmatic breathing and how to take a deep breath.
  • How to use the breath and send it to various parts of the body using movement and visualisation.
  • How to ‘be’ with ourselves and work with the symptoms that are trying to get our attention.

Using these simple techniques on a regular basis can help tremendously with mental health, physical pain/tension and overall general health of both the mind and body.

Understanding that emotion is stored in the body and learning various techniques of how to release it changes our whole perception to health. It really does!

Using medication can block symptoms and can give instant relief which can be great, yet can cause us to feel numb inside, not to mention the adverse reactions; allergic reactions and dependency that sometimes results from taking medication. Medication however can and does have a time and place, so long as people are aware of the choices available to them and their possible side effects.

Quite often, when no-one is looking, I help my A & E patients with ‘Energy Healing’ and teach them about the importance of the breathing properly – many patients have had instant relief from pain, anxiety, panic and breathing difficulties. One patient told me “no-one has ever shown me how to do this before”. Patients have been so grateful for me having spent time with them. They have left the hospital feeling confident and reassured that, to some extent, they could manage things themselves.

Frightened and often vulnerable patients need time to talk to someone, to confide in and trust that we ‘get it’ – feeling understood is crucial to their recovery. When two hearts connect through compassion, empathy and trust, something magical happens and healing can really take place.

What if we were able to teach patients the basics of breathing? How to use the breath to release pain, tension, and tightness from the body. What if we were able to facilitate them in how to ‘feel’ again and how to express their feelings? How amazing would it be for them to feel ‘present in their body’ and most importantly, feel ‘safe’ in their body?

Everyone should be made aware they have choices.

People need to know there is more than one way to help the body feel better. They should be allowed to make an informed decision.
