By the Light of the Silvery Moon

Mesmerising, bewitching, mysterious, and magical are some of the words used to describe the moon. The fact that no one from Earth can see the dark side of the moon from Earth merely increases her allure as each one of her eight phases unleashes your wildest imagination in turn, as they ensure the moon’s ever-changing appearance, trigger your psychic abilities, inspire poetry, music, and stir a passion in your soul like nothing else.

The kinship you feel toward the moon is evident by the fact that you instinctively raise your eyes to the night sky on a clear night and gaze upon her in all her glory as she journeys through the cosmos.

When this happens, you are captivated by Earth’s only natural satellite for the briefest of moments during which your mind is set free in the wonderment of her glory, which can be profound, subtle, and hidden before you are released to more earthly matters.

The full cycle of the moon takes twenty-nine and a half days to complete. During this time, you bear witness to the eight phases of this changing sunlit face that move from right to left or vice versa, depending upon which hemisphere you’re in. The phases are known as the new or black moon, the waxing crescent, the first quarter, the waxing gibbous, the full moon, the waning gibbous, the last quarter, and the waning crescent.

Apart from slowing down the Earth’s rotation, the moon and its phases have had a direct and indirect impact on human beings since time immemorial. It generates the tidal forces of the oceans and, less so with rivers, stabilises the weather, aids navigation, provides a timetable for gardening and crops, and is essential for many animals, particularly birds, to migrate and navigate, as hunter-gatherers did in prehistoric times.

However, to fully appreciate why and how the moon can have such an influence over you, it is important to focus on the spiritual correspondences associated with this feminine energy. It signifies wisdom, intuition, and a spiritual connection body.

When you are drawn to look at the moon, it’s personal; you are looking at and being reminded of the origins of your very existence. With the allure of its variances of light, the moon is prompting you to remember that you are a child of the universe, and as such, you possess within you all its knowledge.

On a physical level, a woman’s menstrual cycle is approximately 28 days so your ancestors recognised this correlation with the moon and saw fit to call this cycle after the moon herself; the word menstruation comes from the Latin word for the month, menses, which in turn relates to the Greek ‘mene’, which means the moon.

The moon affects some more than others; however, for those who respond to its pull, the experience can be profound. Those who work in both the police and the A&E departments in hospitals consider that there is an increase in violent crime when the moon is full. The full moon can also cause insomnia, and some surgeons have found that there is greater blood loss during a full moon; in maternity units, there is often an increase in births following a full moon

The moon can also affect your emotions because 50% of your body is made up of water, and you can feel the moon’s influence on the tides, which can be mood-altering. The more sensitive you are, the greater the mood swings you experience. Spiritual grounding can prevent or limit the loss of self-control experienced during the new and full moons, and the first and third quarters.

If you are sensitive to the moon and its phases, it can influence your mental health, and the word lunacy, a medical term used to describe the condition before it was expanded to cover all mental health symptoms, was derived from the Latin Luna, meaning moon.

The Purkinje effect of the moon results in it giving off a blue-silver hue of light, even though the light comes from it reflecting the sun. This quality makes it very different from the sun’s light, as is your reaction to it. This haunting glow varies in intensity with the moon phases, resulting in you seeing the world in a very different light, a light that reveals that which the sun cannot.

It is a mysterious, magical light that contorts and hides by diffusing colour. That which can reflect moonlight will appear, and that which can’t, will disappear and become hidden. Whereas the sun corresponds to your non-emotional, shallow but powerful, conscious self and your male side, the moon reflects the deepest part of your emotional, gentler self, subconscious mind, and feminine aspects of yourself.

From a spiritual perspective, your six senses can become stronger during a black or new moon, more so sometimes than when the moon is full. During such times, your psychic abilities can increase, and you become far more intuitively aware of that which the moon hides so well.

The spiritual association with the moon and its phases is long, deep, and vast, thanks to her subtle, unassuming presence, which is no less powerful than the sun, as some would think, just different. Long before Christianity and other religions, the moon was known as the Triple Goddess, the female trinity, a goddess with three aspects, the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone, which signifies the three in one mystery. The same theme is also used to describe three parts of the wisdom of the whole universe, which are alchemy, theurgy, and astrology

The rich spiritual history and purpose of the moon resulted in it being represented by an unknown number of spiritual entities that exist in all cultures and mindsets. There are deities, ascended masters, animals, saints, angels, and other types of cosmic beings that are aligned with the moon. They arrive when you are conceived and disperse once you leave the Earth plane.

Their purpose is to help and support you live your life in the ways only the mysterious, gentle, and hidden energy agents of the moon can. They do not allow, judge, or comment; they simply ‘be’ to assist you in representing your best interest by acting as intermediaries between the forces of the moon and yourself when necessary. They work with you and for you, but never against you, even though sometimes it may feel like that.

Then there are those spiritual helpers I call the “moon bods” who haven’t been categorised because they fall outside of your understanding and experience. Nevertheless, they and all other such entities are powerful allies who are on the side of the best of who you are as you wrestle with the complexities of what it is to be human.

The importance of the moon and the role it plays in your life cannot be overestimated, but it’s rarely underestimated because it’s impossible to ignore the subtle yet elegant, life-affirming brilliance of its existence.
