I am not a psychologist nor a therapist, so I don’t claim to know what those professionals know.
However, what I do know are my own experiences and what I have learned from them.
We all have sorrows, pain, regrets, and lack of forgiveness which we bring from our childhood into our adulthood. I have and so have you. We all have talked to people who have told their stories, or we have read those stories or seen films about those stories. They’re out there, and some of them are dramatic and sad, to say the least. Our inner child lives with us in our adulthood. Our inner child lives with us our whole life. The question is this. Does this inner child ever heal? Do these sorrows have to remain within us throughout this entire lifetime?
I carried within me issues of abandonment (my perception) and other family issues that affected my self-worth. They weren’t horrible, just issues that I couldn’t seem to let go of or heal from. My inner child hardly got to play. She was always protecting herself from judgment and failure.
When I started coaching classes, my belief was that I had nothing to contribute to the class. I perceived all my classmates to be more educated than I was – smarter. I thought, “Bev, just go to the class, learn quietly, and take from it what you can.” My child wanted me to play small. Let me tell you, my playing small wasn’t going to be allowed in that group. I knew that this kid within me needed to be put down for a nap! The adult in me was supposed to show up, not the child. My inner child and her issues had way too much power and influence in my life.
Years later, after a lot of inner work and spiritual study, I one day realized that when those old issues came to mind, the sadness and pain were completely gone! I was so amazed and so grateful. I had not purposely thought of any specific childhood issue when I was doing my inner work. I had worked generally on giving love, receiving love, and transforming fear into love.
I was a Sunday School teacher for a sixth-grade class at one point in my life. I presented an object lesson where I placed a clear glass vase on a table and filled it with packing styrofoam. I began to pour water into the vase until all the styrofoam had come to the surface and spilled out onto the table. The teaching was that we are the vase, the styrofoam is sin and the water was the Holy Spirit. Today I would interpret it a little differently. The styrofoam would be our fears. The water would be the knowledge of the Love of God. Perfect Love casts out all fear. It just happens!
When we focus on God’s Love for us and allow the Spirit within to have free reign, we will begin to expand our consciousness of this Love – we fill up with it. The inner pain and fear will be replaced by Love. The child can heal! The child is supposed to heal! The child is supposed to play!
Father, my inner child is still hurting. She wants to be healed and play. Help me, Dear God, to grow in the knowledge of Your Love that she may be healed. And if need be, Father, draw those to me who can help me with this healing. Thank you, God. Thank you.
THE HAPPY HOUR HAS COME!
Bev Lakomek
The child within me
Sleeps in Grace,
The happy hour has come!
Her tears are dry,
Her pain has ceased.
Her wholeness now is done!
Oh God, my Father,
Oh Spirit, His Divine,
My child now lives in gratitude
For Life is so sublime!
She plays in Light,
She sings her songs,
Her joy comes forth with ease,
Because the Truth of who she really is
Has finally set her free!
